FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FIRST Research Book on Birth Doula Support Published by CCFW Fellow, Birth Doula Trainer and Sexologist, Amy L. Gilliland, Ph.D.
Amy Gilliland, Ph.D., is releasing her first book, The Heart of the Doula: Essentials for Practice and Life, at a book launch party on Wednesday, December 5 at Centro Hispano in Madison Wisconsin. Dr. Gilliland is a research fellow at the UW Madison School Of Human Ecology Center For Child And Family Well-Being. She is also one of the first DONA International Birth Doula Trainers, and has trained over 1300 people in the upper Midwest to provide birth doula support since 1997. Earlier this year, Dr. Gilliland celebrated her 100th doula training!
Dr. Gilliland is considered to be one of the world’s primary birth doula researchers and a thought leader on the profession. Her articles are cited in birth doula legislation references in the state of California as well as the Maximizing Outcomes for Moms through Medicaid Improvement and Enhancement of Services (MOMMIES) Act, co-sponsored in September 2018 by Senator Tammy Baldwin.
Her book, The Heart of the Doula: Essentials for Practice and Life, is the first book based on Dr. Gilliland’s extensive interviews with over sixty birth doulas and parents who received their services. It covers best practices for transformative prenatal relationships, getting along with doctors and nurses, and thorny ethical issues doulas usually have to resolve on their own. Advance reviews from well-known perinatal professionals have been overwhelmingly positive.
Besides her research fellowship and birth doula training career, Dr. Gilliland is also an AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator who has taught courses at Madison College for over 10 years.
The launch party at Centro Hispano, 810 W. Badger Rd., Madison, Wisconsin, is from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5. The celebration offers book signings, chocolate treats, a special toast, giveaways, free chair massages from Kneaded Relief Day Spa, and book readings. It takes place during Centro Hispano’s holiday shopping market which benefits Dane County’s Latinx families. The Mercadito offers unique and lovely homemade crafts, artisanal produce, and food items.
Dr. Gilliland’s book is available on Bookbaby.com, Amazon, and the usual online outlets. Her website is amygilliland.com.
